Story text
A little boy named Kazu experiences a warm bedtime ritual in Tokyo, involving a bubble bath, folding paper cranes, and stargazing. He folds his longing for his grandmother into a paper crane, sending it to the distant stars.

The sun has clocked out. Sister Moon slowly climbs up. Tokyo's night lights up with many, many little lanterns. Kazu is holding a little cat named Mochi. "Gurgle, gurgle." Mochi's tummy is singing. Is it time for bed? No, first we must prepare a magical goodnight ritual.

"Splash—" In the bathroom, hot water flows into a big wooden tub. Warm steam rises like clouds. Gurgle, gurgle, the hot water is singing. It smells so nice! Mom has put in a few slices of yellow yuzu. Mochi curiously stretches out a little paw.

"Let's wash Mochi's paws first," Mom says. Kazu picks up a soft little towel. Gently, he wipes the left paw. Gently, he wipes the right paw. Mochi lets out a "meow," feeling so comfortable!

Now it's Kazu's turn! He sits in the warm wooden tub. Dad uses his big hands to scoop up hot water. "Splash—" Gently, he pours it over Kazu's back. Like warm rain falling from the sky. Kazu giggles.

After the bath, his body feels warm and fragrant. He changes into a soft yukata with clouds floating on it. "Rustle, rustle." He steps on the tatami mat. Moonlight sneaks in through the window, making the mat shine. Like it's covered in a layer of silver sand.

Mom takes out a shiny box. Opening it, inside are lots of colorful papers! Red, blue, yellow, green... like a rainbow lives inside. "Tonight, let's fold paper cranes," Mom says. "What's a paper crane?" Kazu asks.

"A paper crane is a little bird of happiness," Mom says. "Fold it in half, then fold it again. See, it becomes the bird's wings!" Kazu copies Mom, folding carefully. Mom says each paper crane carries a secret. At night, they fly into sweet dreams.

Kazu folds a white paper crane. He holds it in his palm and whispers a secret to it. "Paper crane, paper crane, please fly a little higher." "Take my 'goodnight' to Grandma in the sky." "Tell her Kazu misses her very much."
