Emma’s house felt different today. There were tiny socks drying and soft blankets everywhere. Mom was home, but she was sitting very still on the couch, holding a brand new bundle. “Emma,” Mom whispered with a happy smile. “Come meet your baby brother, Noah.” Emma tiptoed closer, her heart doing a funny little dance. He was so small! She felt a big swirl of excitement and a tiny pinch of ‘what do I do now?’ all mixed together.

Emma wanted to touch Noah’s little hand, but her own hands felt big and wiggly. “Can I hold him?” she asked quietly. “Not just yet,” Mom said kindly. “But you can use your gentle hands.” Mom showed her how to softly stroke Noah’s back with just her fingertips. Emma tried it, moving her hand as lightly as a butterfly’s wing. Noah made a tiny sigh. “See?” Mom said. “He likes your gentle touch.” Emma smiled. She could be a gentle big sister.

A little while later, Noah started making little fussy sounds. “He’s telling us he’s hungry,” Mom explained. She got ready to feed him. Emma wanted to help right away! “Can I give him his bottle?” she asked, bouncing on her toes. “He needs to eat first, and that takes quiet time,” Mom said. “You can be my special helper by waiting patiently. How about you draw him a welcome picture?” Emma fetched her crayons. It was hard to wait, but drawing a sun and a bunny for Noah felt like helping too.

After Noah was fed and burped, he got sleepy. “Brrr, I think he might be a little chilly,” Mom said, looking at the light blanket he was in. Emma had an idea! “I know where his cozy blanket is!” She remembered seeing a super-soft, blue blanket folded on the rocking chair. She carefully brought it over, holding it out like a treasure. “Perfect helper!” Mom said, wrapping Noah up snugly. Emma felt a warm glow in her chest. She had helped make Noah cozy!

Mom rocked Noah, humming softly until his eyes closed. Emma watched, feeling a happy kind of quiet. But then, a new feeling popped up. It was a little lonely feeling. She loved Noah, but she missed sitting on Mom’s lap for story time. She shuffled her feet. Was it okay to ask? Taking a deep breath, she whispered, “Mom? Can I have a cuddle, too?” Mom’s eyes got extra sparkly. “Oh, my sweet girl, always,” she said, opening her other arm wide.

Emma climbed up and snuggled into Mom’s side, her head resting on Mom’s shoulder. It was her special spot. Mom’s arm was warm around her. On the other side, Noah slept in his bundle. Emma felt the lonely feeling whoosh away. There was enough love for both of them. She could hear Noah’s tiny, sleepy breaths. It was a nice sound. “We’re a sandwich,” Emma giggled softly. “A love sandwich.” Mom kissed the top of her head. “The very best kind,” she agreed.
