Story text
Nora feels overwhelmed by busy school mornings until a caring grown-up helps her create a picture routine, teaching her to take one step at a time and ask for help.

The sun peeked through Nora's window. "Time for school!" Mama called. Nora pulled her blanket over her head. Her room felt too loud. The clothes were scratchy. The toothpaste was too minty. Everything felt like too much all at once. "I want to stay here," she whispered to Mr. Wiggles, holding her smooth blue stone tightly.

Mama sat softly on the edge of Nora's bed. "Good morning, my sunshine," she said. "Mornings feel big and bumpy, don't they?" Nora nodded, her eyes wide. "What if we made a map?" Mama asked. "A picture map for your morning steps. Just one step in each box." Nora peeked out from her blanket. A map? That sounded interesting.

Together, they drew the map. Mama used bright markers. First box: a smiling sun for "Wake Up." Second: a toothbrush for "Brush Teeth." Third: pants and a shirt for "Get Dressed." They drew six boxes in a row. "Look," said Nora, pointing. "It's not a big, bumpy hill. It's just steps." She felt a little spark of curiosity.

"Let's try Step One," Mama said. Nora looked at the sun picture. She took a deep breath and pushed her blanket down. She sat up! "You did it!" Mama cheered. Nora gave a small smile. Step One was done. She didn't have to think about Step Two yet. Just one step. That felt much better.

Step Two was the toothbrush. But the bathroom light was very bright. Nora froze. "Mama?" she said softly. "The light is tickly on my eyes." Mama understood. "Let's turn on the little night-light instead," she said. The soft glow was just right. Nora brushed her teeth, counting the swishes. Another step was done!

Getting dressed was tricky. Nora's favorite striped shirt was lost in the drawer. "I can't find it!" she said, her voice getting wobbly. She remembered she could ask for help. "Mama, can you help me look?" Together, they found the shirt hiding under a sweater. Nora put it on and felt proud. She asked for help, and it worked!

Nora followed her picture steps: Eat Breakfast (yummy oatmeal with blueberries), Pack Bag (lunchbox, library book), and finally, Shoes On! She sat on the floor, concentrating hard on each velcro strap. Click. Click. She looked at her map. Every single box had a checkmark! A big, warm feeling started to grow in her chest.
