Leo uses his calm plan to navigate the busy sights and sounds of a school assembly, learning it's okay to ask for help when things feel too loud.
Today was assembly day in the big gym. Leo took a deep breath. He and his class lined up at the door. "Remember our calm plan, Leo," whispered Ms. Rivera. Leo nodded. His plan was in his pocket: his twisty blue fidget snake. He was ready to walk in with his friends.
The gym was huge! So many classes were finding spots on the floor. The lights were very bright. Leo held his fidget snake tightly. He followed Sam to their class's square. "We sit here," said Sam. Leo sat down criss-cross applesauce, just like everyone else. He looked at the colorful banners on the walls.
Principal Davis welcomed everyone. His voice boomed from the speakers. Leo felt the sound vibrate in his chest. It was a lot. He looked at his fidget, twisting it slowly. In, out. He breathed with his snake. The loud voice became a little softer inside his head.
A class was singing a song on the stage. The music was happy but very strong. Some kids clapped along. Leo liked the tune, but the clapping was like popping popcorn everywhere. He put his hands over his ears, just for a moment. It helped make a cozy pocket of quiet.
Leo remembered his plan. If things felt too loud, he could ask for help. He looked over at Ms. Rivera. She gave him a kind wave. Leo waved a tiny wave back. Knowing she was there made his shoulders feel less tight. He was doing a good job listening.
His legs were getting wiggly from sitting. Leo saw the janitor quietly fixing a chair at the back of the gym. They worked so calmly. Leo copied them, sitting up straight and still, like a quiet mountain. He focused on his breathing again. In, out. Twist the snake.
Principal Davis was talking about kindness. Leo liked that word. He looked around. Sam was listening. Ms. Rivera was nodding. Everyone was listening in their own way. Some were still, some fidgeted. Leo realized his way was okay. He was part of the big listening group.
The assembly was ending! "Please stand slowly," said Principal Davis. Everyone got up, stretching and chatting. The noise was different now—happy and buzzy. Leo stood up, feeling proud. He had used his plan. He had listened. He put his fidget snake safely back in his pocket.
Walking back to class, Leo felt sunny inside. "You did great, Leo," said Ms. Rivera. "You were a wonderful listener." Leo smiled. The assembly was big and loud, but he had his plan, his teacher, and his friends. Next time, he knew he could do it again.
