Sam loved noticing things. The soft swish of leaves. The gentle hum of the fridge. But some sounds felt different. They were too big and buzzy, like they filled up the whole room. When Sam heard the loud beep-beep-beep of a truck backing up, it made their ears feel prickly. They put their hands over their ears. It helped a little.
One day, Sam and Dad went to the library. It was quiet and nice. Sam found a book about planets. Then... WHOOOOOSH! The big hand dryer in the bathroom went off. Sam jumped. The sound was so sudden and roaring! It felt like a storm in their ears. Sam's hands flew up to cover them again. Their heart went thump-thump-thump.
Dad saw Sam covering their ears. He knelt down so he was at Sam's level. "That dryer is really loud, isn't it?" he said softly. Sam nodded, eyes wide. "It's okay," Dad said. "You can tell me when a sound is too much. We can find a quieter spot." Sam took a deep breath. Telling Dad helped the thump-thump feeling slow down.
They walked back into the main library. But now, it felt different. A baby was giggling. Someone's phone chimed. Pages rustled loudly. All the sounds mixed together into a busy, buzzing noise. Sam tugged Dad's sleeve. "Too much sounds," Sam whispered. "My ears feel full." Dad nodded. "Let's go ask for help," he said.
Dad walked with Sam to the big desk. The librarian, Ms. Reed, smiled at them. "Hello! Can I help you find something?" Dad explained, "We're looking for a quieter place to read for a little while." Ms. Reed's smile grew understanding. "Of course! I know just the spot," she said kindly.
Ms. Reed led them to a special corner. It had a comfy beanbag chair and a little tent made of soft fabric. "This is our quiet nook," she said. "The walls are thick here, so it's much softer." Sam peeked inside. It felt calm, like a cozy cave. The busy buzzing of the library became a distant murmur.
Sam sat in the beanbag. Dad sat on the floor nearby. Sam pulled the soft yellow cloth from their pocket and held it. They took another deep breath, in and out. The prickly, full feeling in their ears started to fade away. The quiet felt like a gentle hug.
After a while, Sam felt ready. They came out of the nook with Dad. The library sounds were still there, but they didn't feel so big anymore. Sam knew they could go back to the quiet spot if they needed to. They even heard the happy giggle of the baby and thought it sounded nice from here.
Walking home, a siren wailed far away. Sam felt their shoulders tense for a second. Then they remembered. They could cover their ears. They could tell Dad. They could find a quieter place. Loud sounds could feel scary, but they could also be okay. Sam held Dad's hand, feeling safe and strong.
