When Leo loses a board game to his sister, he learns gentle ways to handle his disappointment, like taking a deep breath and asking for a break, so they can play again happily later.

Leo and his sister Maya sat on the sunny living room rug. They were playing their favorite board game, 'Space Race.' Leo moved his rocket piece with a big grin. "I'm almost to the moon!" he said. Maya smiled and took her turn, rolling the dice. The colorful game board was covered in stars and planets.

Maya's game piece zoomed ahead. "I reached the finish line!" she cheered gently. Leo looked at the board. His rocket was still far behind. His smile faded. A big, wobbly feeling started in his tummy. His shoulders slumped down. He didn't like this feeling at all. It was the feeling of losing.

"I don't want to play anymore," Leo mumbled, looking at his knees. His eyes felt hot. He crossed his arms tightly. Maya's happy cheer felt too loud. He wished he had won. The colorful game pieces suddenly didn't seem fun anymore. He just wanted to run to his room.

Their mom, who was reading nearby, looked over. "It's hard when a game doesn't go our way," she said softly. "Sometimes, a big breath can help the wobbly feeling." Leo peeked up. He wasn't sure, but he tried. He breathed in slowly through his nose, like smelling a flower.

Then, Leo breathed out long and slow, like blowing out birthday candles. He did it again. In... and out. The tight feeling in his chest loosened just a little. His arms uncrossed. He looked at Maya, who was waiting quietly. "Good game," he said. The words felt funny but okay to say.

"Good game, Leo," Maya said with a kind smile. "You were a super-fast rocket for a while!" Leo gave a small smile back. He had another idea. "Can we... take a break?" he asked. "I think I want to build with blocks for a little bit." Asking felt brave.

"That's a great idea," Maya said. "I'll help!" They left the game board and went to the block basket. Leo started stacking big blue blocks. Clunk, clunk, clunk. He built a tall tower. Maya built a bridge next to it. They didn't talk about the game. They just built together.

After their block castle was finished, Leo felt much better. The wobbly feeling was all gone. He looked at the Space Race board, still on the rug. The planets and stars looked fun again. "Maya," he said. "Do you want to play another game? Maybe I can be the blue rocket this time?"
