Story text
A child uses a calm plan to help with the shopping and navigate the bright, busy grocery store with a grown-up.

Sam and Mama stand by their front door. 'Ready for our grocery trip?' Mama asks. Sam nods, feeling the smooth blue fidget toy in their pocket. They have a plan. First, stay close. Second, help with the cart. Third, use the plan if things feel too busy. Sam takes a deep breath. 'Ready,' they say.

The automatic doors whoosh open. The grocery store is full of color and sound! Bright lights hum from the ceiling. Music plays softly from speakers. Sam holds Mama's hand and remembers step one: stay close. They walk together past towering shelves of cereal boxes, each one a rainbow picture.

Mama gets a big silver cart. 'Would you like to help push?' she asks. Sam smiles. That's step two! They put both hands on the cool metal bar. Together, they guide the cart down the wide aisle. The wheels make a quiet, rumbly sound that Sam likes. Push, rumble, turn. It feels good to help.

In the fruit and vegetable section, colors pop! Round red apples shine under the lights. Fuzzy peaches sit in neat rows. Bunches of green bananas hang like smiles. Sam points to the oranges. 'Can we get some?' Mama puts a bag in the cart. 'Good spotting!' she says.

The store is getting busier. More carts rumble by. A baby cries in another aisle. The overhead lights feel very bright. Sam's heart goes thump-thump. They remember step three: the calm plan. Sam squeezes their fidget toy, takes a deep breath, and counts three green things: a lime, Mama's shirt, a sign.

Feeling calmer, Sam helps find the last things: a box of pasta shaped like little shells and a carton of milk. Mama checks the list. 'All done! Time for checkout.' They steer the full cart toward the front of the store, where lines of people are waiting.

The checkout line is long. Beeps and rustles come from all around. Sam stands close to the cart, holding the bar. They watch the conveyor belt move. It's like a silver river carrying groceries away. Mama puts their items on the belt. Shell pasta, milk, oranges. Sam helps by holding the empty list.

Finally, it's their turn. The cashier, Ms. Rosa, smiles. 'Hello, helpers!' she says in a soft voice. She scans each item with a gentle *beep*. Sam watches the numbers pop up on the screen. Mama pays. 'You did such a good job waiting,' she whispers to Sam.
