Leo, an autistic child, finds comfort and confidence when his classroom routine changes with a substitute teacher, learning that school is still safe and asking for help makes new things easier.
Leo loved his classroom. Every morning, he hung his backpack on the hook with the star sticker. He put his lunchbox in the blue cubby. Then, he would give Ms. River a high-five. "Good morning, Leo!" she would say. Her voice was like a sunny song. Leo knew exactly what came next. He felt calm and ready to learn.
But one Tuesday, when Leo walked in, Ms. River wasn't there. A different person stood by her desk. Leo's heart did a little flip. His hands felt tingly. The morning picture schedule was in a different spot! The new person smiled. "Hello, friends! I'm Mr. Sam. Ms. River is home with a cold. I'm your teacher for today." Leo took a deep breath. This was a big change.
Leo sat at his desk. He held his smooth green stone tight in his pocket. The morning song started, but Mr. Sam sang it a little slower. The words were the same, but his voice was deeper. Leo watched his friend Maya. She was singing along and tapping her feet. Leo tried to tap his feet too. It helped a little. Maybe some things were still the same.
During reading time, Mr. Sam held up their favorite book. Leo loved this story! But Mr. Sam turned the pages on the wrong side. He didn't do the funny voices like Ms. River. Leo felt a worried knot in his tummy. He wanted the story to feel right. He looked at the classroom door. He knew who could help.
Leo raised his hand. "Mr. Sam?" he said softly. "Can I see Principal Joy?" Mr. Sam nodded kindly. "Of course, Leo. Maya, would you like to walk with him?" Maya jumped up with a smile. Together, they walked down the quiet hall. Leo's shoes made a familiar tap-tap sound on the floor. That sound was always the same.
Principal Joy's door was open. She was watering a big plant. "Well, hello, Leo and Maya!" she said. Leo took another deep breath. "Ms. River isn't here," he said. "I know," said Principal Joy, her voice gentle. "That's a big change. School is still safe. Mr. Sam is a very good teacher. How can I help you feel ready?"
Leo thought. "Can we move the picture schedule back? And... can you tell Mr. Sam about the funny voices in the book?" Principal Joy smiled. "Those are wonderful ideas. Let's go tell him together." They walked back to class. Leo felt the knot in his tummy start to loosen. Asking for help felt brave.
Back in class, Principal Joy talked quietly to Mr. Sam. He listened and nodded. Then, he moved the picture schedule to its usual spot. Leo felt a wave of calm. For afternoon story time, Mr. Sam tried a silly goat voice. It was different from Ms. River's, but it was funny! Leo let out a little giggle. Different could be okay.
At the end of the day, Leo gave Mr. Sam a high-five, just like with Ms. River. "Thank you for your help today, Leo," Mr. Sam said. Leo smiled. He had his green stone, his friend Maya, and teachers who listened. School was safe, even when things changed. Tomorrow, maybe he could show Mr. Sam the best way to water the class plant.
