Story text
A child named Riley follows a cozy, step-by-step bedtime routine, from putting on pajamas to feeling safe and snug in bed.

The sun has said goodnight, and the moon is peeking out. Riley knows it's time for bed. 'First step,' Mom says with a smile, 'is to get cozy!' Riley opens the drawer and pulls out favorite blue pajamas covered in silver stars. They feel soft and warm, like a hug from a cloud. Riley wiggles into them, ready for the next step.

'Second step is for a shiny smile,' says Mom. In the bathroom, Riley squeezes a tiny pea of sparkly toothpaste onto a blue toothbrush. Swish, swish, brush, brush! Front teeth, back teeth, up and down. The minty foam makes everything feel fresh and clean. Riley gives a big, shiny grin in the mirror. All clean for dreamland!

Now for the third step: picking a story! Riley's bookshelf is full of adventures. There's one about a brave little tugboat and another about a garden of talking flowers. Tonight, Riley chooses the book with the friendly dragon on the cover. It's perfect for a quiet, snuggly read.

Mom and Riley snuggle into the big, comfy chair. 'Once upon a time...' Mom begins to read. Her voice is soft and steady, like a slow, gentle river. Riley listens, eyes getting a little heavy, holding Stuffy the bunny close. The story winds its way to a happy ending, just as the room grows dim.

Step four is for the lights. Mom turns the big lamp off, leaving only the friendly glow of the night-light. It casts soft, wavy shapes on the wall that look like swimming fish. The room feels peaceful and quiet, a special nest just for resting.

'Fifth step,' whispers Mom, 'is a calm, sleepy body.' Riley takes a deep breath in, smelling the clean sheets. Then a long breath out, letting all the wiggles go. Shoulders relax. Toes uncurl. Riley feels heavy and warm, like a spoonful of honey, sinking softly into the mattress.

Mom tucks the blankets around Riley, just right. 'Goodnight, my sweet one,' she says, planting a gentle kiss on Riley's forehead. It feels like a warm stamp of love. She whispers, 'You are safe. You are loved.' Then she tiptoes quietly to the door.

Alone in the cozy dark, Riley holds Stuffy tight. The house makes its goodnight sounds: the soft hum of the fridge, the gentle creak of the floor settling. Outside, a distant owl calls, 'Whoo-whoo.' All these sounds are part of the quiet, keeping watch through the night.
