Story text
A gentle story about going outside for recess, choosing an activity, asking to join others, taking quiet breaks, and lining up to return to class.

Sometimes at school, we go outside for recess. Recess is a time to play and move our bodies. The bell may ring to tell us it is recess time. I can look out the window and see the sunny playground. My teacher, Ms. Rivera, will tell us it's time to go. I can take a deep breath and get ready. It's okay to feel a little excited and a little unsure. Going outside is a new part of our school day.

When we go outside, there are many things to see and do. Some children run fast on the grass, laughing as they go. Some children play on the swings, going high up into the sky. Others might be climbing or talking together. It is okay to look around first. I can stand near my teacher and just watch for a moment. Seeing all the fun helps me think about what I might like to try. The playground is big, but I can take my time.

I can choose what I want to do. I may want to swing, feeling the wind in my hair. I may want to play in the sand, building a castle or digging a hole. I can pick one thing to try first. If I change my mind, that's okay too. My feet can take me to the swing set or over to the sandbox. Choosing is a special part of recess. It's my time to decide what feels good for my body.

If I see children playing a game, I can ask to join. I can walk up, smile, and say, 'Can I play too?' in a friendly voice. Sometimes they say yes, and that feels wonderful! Sometimes they are playing a full game or have their own plan. If they say 'not right now,' I can nod and find something else to do. Asking is brave. Whether the answer is yes or no, I tried my best.

Recess can feel busy and loud. If I need a quiet break, I can find a spot to sit. A bench under a tree is a perfect place. I can watch the leaves wiggle in the breeze. I can take slow, deep breaths. In... and out. This is a good way to feel calm. My body can rest for a few minutes. Taking a break helps me feel ready to play again or get ready to go inside.

When the bell rings again, recess is over. The sound tells us it is time to stop playing. Ms. Rivera may call us to line up. She waves her hand and says, 'Time to line up, friends!' I can finish what I am doing. I can put down the sand shovel or slow my swing. It is time to walk toward my teacher and the line. Stopping is part of the recess plan.
