Mia held Dad's hand tightly as they walked up to the big preschool door. Inside, she could hear happy sounds of play. But Mia's tummy felt wiggly. Soon, Dad would have to go to work, and the classroom door would close. She wanted him to stay right here with her all day. She looked up at his kind face, feeling a big squeeze in her heart.

"It's time for our goodbye, Mia Bean," Dad said softly, kneeling down. Mia's eyes got a little shiny. The wiggly feeling grew. Just then, Teacher Ana came over. "Hello, Mia!" she said with a sunny smile. "I see it's goodbye time. Would you like to do our special goodbye steps? They help our hearts feel ready." Mia looked from Dad to Teacher Ana and gave a tiny nod.

"First, is one big hug," Teacher Ana said. Dad opened his arms, and Mia stepped in for a long, cozy squeeze. It felt safe and warm. "Next, is one big wave," Teacher Ana continued. Mia turned and waved at Dad through the classroom window. Dad waved back, making a silly face that made Mia's mouth twitch into almost a smile.

"Now, one slow breath," Teacher Ana whispered, placing a hand on her own chest. Mia took a deep breath in, filling her lungs like a balloon, and let it out slowly like a quiet wind. The wiggly feeling in her tummy got a little smaller. "And last," said Teacher Ana, "you choose your first favorite thing." Mia pointed to the block corner.

Before Dad left, he gave Mia a small, shiny red heart sticker. "Keep this in your pocket," he said. "It's a remember-heart. It means I am thinking of you, and I will come back after school, just like always." Mia carefully put the sticker in her pocket. She could feel its slight bump there. It was like a secret hello from Dad.

Mia went to the block corner and started building a tall, twisty tower. She checked the big picture schedule on the wall. Next was story time! She followed the other children to the reading rug. Teacher Ana read a book about a little boat on a big adventure. Mia listened, and her hand slipped into her pocket to touch the heart sticker.

At lunch, Mia sat with her friend Leo. They ate sandwich triangles and apple slices. "My mom gave me a special rock today," Leo said, showing her a smooth gray stone. Mia smiled and whispered, "My dad gave me a heart." She didn't take it out, but she knew it was there. It made her feel brave, like the little boat in the story.
