Maya learns to wait, use kind words, and take turns when she wants to play with a special toy, helping her and her friend Leo have fun together.

It was playtime in Ms. Rivera's class! The room buzzed with happy sounds. Maya spotted the best toy of all—the big red fire truck with a ladder that really moved. Her eyes sparkled. She loved making the siren sound, "Wee-oo! Wee-oo!" She started to walk toward it, her heart doing a little hop of excitement.

But just then, Leo reached the fire truck first. He picked it up carefully. "Vroom!" he said, rolling it along the carpet. Maya's happy hop turned into a heavy thump in her chest. Her shoulders slumped. She wanted that truck right now! A big, disappointed feeling started to wiggle inside her, like a restless little worm. She frowned, watching Leo play.

Maya felt her face get warm. She wanted to stomp her foot or shout, "It's my turn!" But she remembered what Ms. Rivera always said: "First, take a slow breath." Maya closed her eyes. She breathed in slowly through her nose, like she was smelling a flower. She breathed out through her mouth, like she was blowing on soup. The wiggly, disappointed feeling got a little quieter.

Feeling calmer, Maya walked over to Leo. She used her kind-words voice. "Leo, that fire truck looks so fun. May I please have a turn when you are done?" Leo looked up. He was building a block tower for the truck to rescue. "Okay, Maya," he said. "I'll be done when I finish this rescue mission!" Maya nodded. Waiting was hard, but asking felt better.

Maya wasn't sure what to do while she waited. She saw the basket of wooden animals. She sat down and started making a parade. The elephant marched behind the giraffe. "This is fun too," she thought, smiling a little. She kept one eye on Leo's rescue mission. Waiting didn't mean you had to just stand there!

Soon, Ms. Rivera came over. She had seen everything. She knelt down between Maya and Leo. "Maya, you used such kind words to ask for a turn. That was very patient. And Leo, you told Maya your plan. That was very clear. Sharing our toys and our plans helps everyone feel good." Maya felt a warm, proud glow in her tummy.

"My mission is complete!" Leo announced proudly. He carefully drove the red fire truck over to Maya. "Your turn, Maya." "Thank you, Leo!" Maya said, her whole face lighting up. She took the truck gently. She remembered how Leo liked to play with it, driving it smoothly. She gave the ladder a gentle spin.
