Lily learns the calm and safe way to meet a new dog: ask first, move slowly, offer a hand to sniff, and pet gently.

Lily loved seeing dogs in the park! One sunny afternoon, she spotted a big, fluffy golden dog with a kind-looking man. Lily remembered the first rule: always ask the owner. She stopped a few steps away, smiled politely, and asked, 'Hello! May I pet your dog?' The man, Mr. Ben, smiled back. 'You may,' he said. 'His name is Sunny. It's very nice of you to ask first.' Lily felt proud for remembering.

Mr. Ben said yes! Lily knew the next step was to stay calm. If she ran or shouted, even a friendly dog like Sunny might get a little scared. Lily took a deep breath to feel calm inside. Then, she walked toward Sunny slowly and quietly, her feet taking small, gentle steps. She kept a soft smile on her face. Sunny watched her come closer, his tail giving a slow, curious wag. Moving slowly showed Sunny that Lily was a friend.

Now Lily was close to Sunny. She remembered dogs like to say hello with their noses first. Lily held out her hand, keeping her fingers together and her palm flat and low. She let her hand stay very still, like a quiet little landing pad. Sunny stepped forward and sniffed her hand gently. His nose was cool and wet! This was Sunny's way of learning who Lily was. Lily waited patiently, letting Sunny decide when he was done sniffing.

Sunny finished sniffing and gave a happy wiggle. He was ready for pets! Lily gently moved her flat hand to stroke Sunny's back, right between his shoulders. She used slow, smooth strokes, going the way his fur grew. 'Good dog,' she said softly. She knew friendly dogs still need their own space, so she didn't hug him or pat his head. She just petted his back and chest, which most dogs love. Sunny leaned into the pets, his tail wagging like a happy metronome.

After a lovely petting session, Sunny walked back to Mr. Ben. That was okay! It meant Sunny needed a little break. Lily didn't feel sad. Instead, she took a big, deep breath of the park air and smiled. She gave a cheerful wave. 'Bye, Sunny! Bye, Mr. Ben! Thank you!' she called. Lily felt great. She had been calm, kind, and safe. She couldn't wait to use her dog-meeting skills again another day!
