Story text
A curious girl named Dina follows a trail of simple clues at her classroom's fossil table, learning to observe carefully and share her exciting discovery with her friends.

Dina loved her classroom's special fossil table. It was covered in interesting things! There were big shells, funny-shaped rocks, and even a piece of petrified wood. Today, something new caught her eye. Right in the middle of the table was a perfectly round, smooth stone. It looked like it didn't belong with the bumpy fossils. "Hmm," Dina whispered to herself. "That's a clue!" She picked up the round stone. It felt cool and heavy in her hand.

Dina looked all around the round stone. What could it mean? Then she saw it! Just behind where the stone had been was a tiny, perfect footprint pressed into a flat piece of clay. It had three little toes! "Wow!" Dina gasped. She remembered Ms. Lily saying some dinosaurs had three-toed feet. She carefully put the round stone next to the footprint. They looked like they belonged together. This was getting exciting!

Where did the little three-toed dinosaur go next? Dina looked to the left of the footprint. Nothing. She looked to the right. More nothing. Then she looked straight ahead, right at the big fern plant on the windowsill. Tucked under one of its leaves was another clue! It was a dark gray stone with the clear, delicate print of an ancient leaf on it. "A leaf fossil!" Dina said, remembering its name. The trail was leading her across the table.

Dina placed the leaf fossil next to the footprint. The trail went from the round stone, to the foot, to the leaf. She followed it with her finger. "What eats leaves?" she wondered out loud. Just then, her friend Sam came over. "What are you doing, Dina?" he asked. "I'm following a fossil trail!" she explained, pointing to the three clues. "Look, a stone, a foot, and a leaf!" Sam's eyes grew wide. "Cool! Where does it go?"

Dina and Sam looked where the leaf fossil was pointing. Their eyes landed on the class reading corner. There, sitting proudly on top of the tallest bookshelf, was a bright green toy dinosaur! It was smiling right at them. "Tiny!" Dina laughed. Tiny the dinosaur was their class mascot. He must have started the trail! Dina carefully got a stool, climbed up, and gently brought Tiny down. The little plush dinosaur felt soft and friendly.

Dina held Tiny and looked back at the trail on the table. She had a big question. "But why?" she asked Sam. "Why would Tiny make a trail?" Just then, their other friend Maya joined them. She looked at the clues, then at Tiny, then at the big, empty spot in the middle of the fossil table. "Maybe," Maya said slowly, "Tiny wanted to show us something was missing?" Dina looked at the empty spot. Maya was right! It did look too bare.
