Leo feels sleepy and slow when it's time to get ready for school, but with a grown-up's gentle help, he learns to follow his morning routine one small step at a time, discovering a feeling of calm pride.

The sun peeks through Leo's window, painting stripes of gold on his wall. Leo snuggles deeper under his cozy blanket. "Mornings are so... big," he thinks with a yawn. He feels like a sleepy turtle who just wants to stay in his shell. Outside his door, he hears the soft, cheerful sound of his mom humming a morning song.

The door opens softly. "Good morning, my little lion," Mom says with a smile. Leo rubs his eyes. "I'm too sleepy for getting ready," he mumbles. Mom sits on the edge of his bed. "We don't have to do everything at once," she whispers. "Let's just start with one tiny step. Ready for step one?" Leo nods, curious. "Step one: Feet on the floor!"

Leo wiggles his toes on the soft rug. "I did it!" he says, a little surprised. "Step two," Mom says, "is a quick bathroom visit." Leo pads to the bathroom. He looks at his toothbrush and thinks about playing with his bath toys instead. "Just one thing at a time," he reminds himself, remembering step one. He finishes his bathroom job and feels a tiny spark of accomplishment.

Back in his room, Leo sees his clothes laid out on a chair. His pajamas are so comfy! Getting dressed feels like a big, wiggly task. "Step three," Mom calls from the hallway. "Find your shirt!" Leo picks up his soft red shirt. "Step four: Arms in the holes!" He giggles as he pokes his arms through. It feels like a silly game now!

Dressed and feeling brighter, Leo follows the yummy smell to the kitchen. Sunny the cat weaves around his legs. "Step five is for your tummy," Mom says, placing a bowl of oatmeal with banana slices on the table. Leo climbs onto his chair. He takes a big spoonful. "It's warm and sweet," he says with a happy mouthful. The oatmeal gives him a cozy, energy feeling.

Breakfast is done! Leo feels much more awake. But then he sees his shoes by the door. They look like two complicated puzzles. His smile starts to fade. Mom sees his worried face. "Step six," she says calmly. "Just the left shoe." Leo focuses. He pushes his foot in and pulls the strap. "Velcro!" he says, pleased with the ripping sound.

"Step seven: The right shoe!" Leo says, beating Mom to it. He gets his other shoe on all by himself. He stands up and stamps his feet. "They're on!" he announces. Mom claps her hands softly. "You did it, Leo! You followed all the steps!" Leo looks down at his dressed self, his full tummy, and his fastened shoes. A warm, proud feeling blooms in his chest.
