When his block tower crashes, Noah feels angry and frustrated. With a caring grown-up's help, he learns to notice his feelings, take a slow breath, and use words, discovering that strong feelings can pass and he can try again.

Noah was building the tallest, most wonderful block tower the world had ever seen. He carefully placed one colorful block on top of another. "Almost to the ceiling!" he whispered to himself, his tongue sticking out in concentration. The afternoon sun shone through the window, making the blocks glow.

CRASH! BUMP! THUD! Noah's tower wobbled, then tumbled down in a loud, colorful avalanche. Blocks bounced and rolled across the whole rug. In an instant, Noah's wonderful tower was just a messy pile. His hands flew to his cheeks and his eyes went very wide.

A big, hot feeling bubbled up in Noah's chest. "No! No! No!" he yelled. His face felt scrunchy and his fists were tight balls. He wanted to kick the blocks. He wanted to yell louder. A wobbly feeling started behind his eyes. It was all just too much.

Just then, Mama came in. She didn't tell him to stop feeling. She knelt down on the rug next to the block pile. "Oh, Noah," she said softly. "That looked like a very tall tower. I see a big feeling on your face. It's okay to feel that way." Buster the dog trotted over and nuzzled Noah's knee.

"My tower fell!" Noah said, his voice shaky. "I'm so... so MAD!" Mama nodded. "I hear you. That is so frustrating," she said. "When I have a big feeling, sometimes my body needs to pause. Should we try a pause together? Let's be statues." Noah took a wobbly breath and froze like a statue. Mama did too.

"Now," Mama whispered, still a statue, "let's take one slow, pretend sniff of a beautiful flower." Noah sniffed in slowly through his nose, imagining a bright red flower. "And now," Mama said, "let's blow out one slow, pretend birthday candle." Noah pursed his lips and blew the air out slowly.

Something felt a little less tight in Noah's chest. His fists unclenched. "I... I didn't like when it fell," he said, using his words. "I worked so hard." Mama smiled. "You told me with your words. Thank you. Feelings can be very strong, but watch... they can also get smaller, like a cloud passing by."
